Mountains & Lakes: 5 Destination Combos to Compare

There are some truly incredible mountain-and-lake combinations out there for Travel Bugs looking for a different kind of trip — one that isn't built around checking cities off a list, but around slowing down into scenery instead. Some of the most memorable trips we plan pair dramatic peaks with equally dramatic lakes, and it's a formula that works almost anywhere in the world. Here's a look at five of our favorite mountain-and-lake pairings, what makes each one different, when to go, and a rough itinerary to show how the days could actually break down.

Quick note on how we're counting: each itinerary below starts on Day 1 in-destination — travel days to get there aren't included. Pricing is also a range and is dependent on number of people, caliber of accommodation, and season.

Switzerland

Lake Lucerne, Lake Geneva, Lake Thun and Brienz — Switzerland's lakes sit right at the base of some of its most famous peaks, which makes it easy to build a trip that moves fluidly between the two.

Best time to visit: Summer (June–August) is peak season — alpine meadows in bloom, lakes warm enough to swim, every cable car running. Early fall (September) is a close second, with crisp air and thinner crowds. Winter (December–March) is prime for skiing in Zermatt. Spring (April–May) is trickier — snowmelt closes some higher trails and cable cars.

Important note: This is our best overall pick for families and a range of activity levels — there's truly something here for everyone in the group.

  • Price Range: 500 CHF per person, per day

Sample Itinerary (11 days):

  • Fly into Zurich

  • 2 nights: Lucerne (Lake Lucerne, Rigi & Pilatus)

  • 3 nights: Interlaken (Lake Thun & Brienz, Jungfrau day trips)

  • 3 nights: Zermatt (Matterhorn)

  • 2 nights: Geneva (Lake Geneva, Montreux & Chillon)

  • Fly home from Geneva

(Can also be done in reverse.)

Italy

The Italian Lakes sit right at the doorstep of the Dolomites, which makes for one of our favorite two-in-one itineraries — glamorous lake time followed by dramatic mountain scenery.

Best time to visit: Late spring (May–June) and early fall (September) are ideal for the lakes — mild, lush, and less crowded than peak summer. Summer (June–August) is best for the Dolomites' hiking season, though the lakes get hot and busy. Winter (December–March) shifts the Dolomites into ski mode via the Dolomiti Superski network.

Important note: The Dolomites portion of this trip is best suited to adventure junkies and/or wellness seekers — it's less about sightseeing and more about immersing yourself in the mountains.

  • Price Range: €500 EUR per person, per day

Sample Itinerary (10–11 days):

  • Fly into Milan

  • 2 nights: Lake Como

  • 3 nights: Lake Garda

  • 4–5 nights: The Dolomites

  • Fly home from Venice

(Can also be done in reverse.)

Slovenia

Slovenia packs mountains, lakes, and coastline into a country you can drive across in a few hours — which makes it an incredible destination for travelers who want variety without long transfer times.

Best time to visit: Late spring through early fall (May–September) covers all bases — warm enough for the coast, green and mild in the Julian Alps. July and August are peak season with the busiest coast towns. Winter brings skiing to the Julian Alps (Kranjska Gora), but the full mountains-lakes-coast combo works best outside of winter.

Important note: This trip is best when hiring a driver or renting a car — getting between regions is part of the experience, but it does require wheels.

  • Price Range: $350 USD per person, per day

Sample Itinerary (11 days):

  • Fly into Ljubljana

  • 2 nights: Ljubljana (Old Town, Postojna Cave day trip)

  • 3 nights: Lake Bled (Vintgar Gorge, Lake Bohinj day trip)

  • 2 nights: Bovec / Soča Valley (Julian Alps, rafting, hiking)

  • 3 nights: Piran (Slovenian Adriatic coast)

  • Fly home from Ljubljana

Worth noting: Croatia's Plitvice Lakes National Park is only about 2.5 hours from Ljubljana — a great add-on for clients who want even more lake scenery.

Canadian Rockies

Glacier-fed lakes in every shade of turquoise, set against snow-capped peaks — the Canadian Rockies are one of the most photogenic mountain-and-lake combinations anywhere.

Best time to visit: Summer (June–August) is peak season, with the most vivid lake color from glacial melt and full access to trails and the Icefields Parkway. September brings golden larches and thinner crowds. Winter (December–March) turns this into a ski trip instead — a very different itinerary.

Important note: Great for all types of travelers, and close to home for our U.S. clients! Renting a car is a must here.

  • Price Range: $300 USD per person, per day

Sample Itinerary (7 nights / 8 days):

  • Fly into Calgary

  • 4 nights: Banff & Lake Louise (Moraine Lake, Banff Gondola, Icefields Parkway)

  • 3 nights: Jasper (Maligne Lake, Athabasca Glacier)

  • Fly home from Edmonton (or loop back to Calgary)

Optional add-on: Extend the trip with 2 nights in Vancouver plus a 1-night Rocky Mountaineer rail journey (via Kamloops) into Banff — swap the Calgary arrival for Vancouver, bringing the total to 10 nights / 11 days.

New Zealand

New Zealand's South Island is basically built for this kind of trip — turquoise lakes, snow-capped peaks, and enough adventure activities to keep even the most active travelers busy.

Best time to visit: Remember the seasons flip below the equator. December–February (their summer) is peak season for hiking, lake activities, and warm weather. March–April (fall) is a personal favorite — stunning colors, thinner crowds, still-mild weather. June–August is ski season around Queenstown and Wanaka, which turns this into a different kind of trip entirely.

Important note: A hired driver or rental car is a must here too. It's amazing value for the experience, but it does require more travel to get there — and it's worth every hour.

  • Price Range: $350 USD per person, per day

Sample Itinerary (11 days):

  • Fly into Queenstown

  • 4 nights: Queenstown (Lake Wakatipu, Milford Sound day trip)

  • 2 nights: Wanaka (Lake Wanaka)

  • 2 nights: Aoraki/Mount Cook (Lake Pukaki)

  • 2 nights: Franz Josef / Fox Glacier (West Coast)

  • Fly home from Christchurch
