Honeymoon Planning 101: What We Tell Every Newly Engaged Couple

Planning a wedding is a full-time job. Planning the honeymoon on top of it? That's usually the part that gets squeezed into a Sunday night, three glasses of wine deep, doom scrolling on TikTok after searching "best honeymoon destinations" at 11pm.

We get it — and we also think the honeymoon deserves more intention than that, because it's genuinely one of the only trips you'll ever take that's just about the two of you, no guest list, no seating chart.

You outsource things like your cake, day of coordination, floral arrangements, make up and hair, photography, etc., because it makes sense to do so. Why would you not do the same for one of the most important trips of your life?

So... before you book anything, here's what we walk every couple through:

Give Yourselves Time to Actually Plan

The honeymoon often becomes an afterthought in the wedding planning process, and that's exactly how couples either end up overpaying, settling for a trip that doesn't actually fit them, or feeling stressed to jump on a decision they weren't overly confident about.

Start thinking about it at least six to nine months out if you can (although 9-12 months is even more relaxed) — not because you need to book that early, but because good travel planning takes a little runway. Keep in mind that the cost of the honeymoon is also spread out over this time. The closer you are to booking, the larger the sum is that's due.

And here's a tip we give a lot of couples: your honeymoon doesn't have to happen the week after the wedding. Plenty of our clients take a short, low-key trip right after the wedding just to decompress, then take the "real" honeymoon a month or two later once the wedding fog has cleared. There's no rule that says it has to be immediate.

Talk Budget Before You Fall in Love with a Place

It's tempting to start dreaming about the destination first — golden hour in Santorini, a private villa in Bora Bora, the whole vision board. Don't get us wrong, there's nothing wrong with dreaming big! That's actually the fun part.

But have the budget conversation before you fall in love with a specific place, not after. It's a lot harder to talk numbers once you've already pictured yourselves there and I can't tell you how many conversations I've had with newly engaged couples about what they think a certain looking trip will cost versus what it actually costs...thanks ChatGPT *eye-roll.*

And if you already have a dream destination in mind and you're not budging on it — that's completely fine too. It just shifts the conversation from "where can we afford to go" to "how do we make this destination work for what we can spend." That's exactly the kind of thing we help couples figure out: which resort tier fits the budget, when to travel for better rates, and where to splurge versus save so the dream destination still feels attainable rather than out of reach.

If a honeymoon fund is part of your wedding registry, factor that in too, but don't count on it fully covering the trip until it's actually in hand.***

Decide What Kind of Trip You Actually Want

Couples don't always want the same thing, and that's worth talking through before you start browsing. One of you might be dreaming of a week completely horizontal on a beach; the other might want to hike volcanoes and eat their way through a new city.

Neither instinct is wrong — but they do need to be discussed.

The best honeymoons usually blend a little bit of both: enough structure to feel like an adventure, enough nothing-on-the-calendar to feel like a real reset.

Let a Travel Advisor Handle the Details

We're obviously a little biased here, but this is genuinely one of the best-kept secrets in honeymoon planning: a good travel advisor often gets you more than you'd get booking it yourself — room upgrades, resort credits, late checkout, sometimes a bottle of champagne waiting in the room, because of relationships we've built with hotels and resorts over years of sending clients there.

On top of that, if a flight gets cancelled or a resort has an issue mid-trip, you've got someone in your corner fixing it in real time instead of sitting on hold from a beach chair. The peace of mind knowing someone is in your corner to assist you can be priceless — especially for the planner in the relationship... because we know there's always one ;)

Check Your Passport (and Your Name) Early

A detail that trips up more couples than you'd think: your passport needs to match the name on your plane ticket. If you're planning to change your last name, most advisors will tell you the same thing — travel under your current passport name and update it after the honeymoon, rather than racing to change everything beforehand.

Also double check expiration dates for everyone traveling; many countries require six months of validity beyond your travel dates, and this is not a problem you want to discover at the airport.

Don't Skip Travel Insurance

After everything that's gone into the wedding, financially and otherwise — this is not the trip to leave uninsured.

Travel insurance covers more than most people realize: trip cancellation, medical emergencies abroad, delayed or lost luggage, even coverage if a family emergency forces you to cut the trip short. It's a small cost against a very large one if something goes wrong.

Build in Breathing Room

This is probably our biggest piece of advice, and the one couples thank us for most afterward: don't over schedule your honeymoon. It's tempting to try to see and do everything, especially if you're going somewhere you may not get back to for a while.

But a honeymoon isn't a highlight-reel vacation — it's meant to feel slower than that.

Leave unscheduled time in every day. You'll use it.

Splurge Where It Actually Matters

You don't need to upgrade every single thing to make a honeymoon feel special — that adds up fast and rarely feels as meaningful as you'd hope. Instead, pick one or two splurges that actually mean something to you as a couple: the overwater bungalow, the private sunset dinner, the couples' spa afternoon.

A few intentional splurges will always beat a trip that's expensive everywhere and memorable nowhere.

Unplug (At Least a Little)

Put the "do not disturb" sign to good use ;).

However you feel about social media, consider giving yourselves permission to post less, or not at all while you're there. The honeymoon is one of the only times in life built entirely around being present with your partner and that's worth protecting.

Ready to Start Planning?

However you picture your honeymoon — beach and stillness, adventure and exploration, or some combination of both — the most important thing is that it actually reflects the two of you.

That's exactly what we love helping couples figure out.
